Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been an invaluable asset to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since his emergence as a senior economist and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. He has made significant contributions to the NPP both in and out of government, including serving as Co-Chair of the Economic Policy Coordinating Committee under President Kufuor, and as a key member of the government’s Technical Negotiation Team that successfully negotiated a $4 billion relief for Ghana in 2001 under the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative.
As Chairman of the Capital Markets Committee, he played a crucial role in making Ghana the first post-HIPC country in the world to access the international capital markets. Additionally, Bawumia was a key member of the team that implemented the redenomination of the cedi, Ezwich, and the Bank of Ghana’s inflation targeting framework.
In 2008, Bawumia was selected as the party's running mate to Nana Akufo Addo, which he accepted, despite sacrificing a secure job as Deputy Governor. After the party's election loss in 2008, he was left jobless. However, he was reselected by the party to be the running mate again in 2012 and left a secured job at the African Development Bank to accept the position. Unfortunately, the party lost the election again, leaving him jobless for a second time.
During the 2012 election dispute, Bawumia was the star witness for the party and led the team that analyzed over 24,000 Pink Sheets. He exposed major loopholes in the electoral system, withstanding the bullying of Tsatsu Tsikata in court. As a result, major electoral reforms were made, including the continuous voter registration exercise, establishment of a National Collation Centre, and use of biometric verification devices.
As Vice President, Bawumia has contributed materially and financially to the NPP's activities from polling station to national levels. He regularly takes care of the welfare of hundreds of party operatives and grassroots members across constituencies. He has also been a member of the party's Manifesto Committees in 2012, 2016, and chaired the 2020 committee.
Bawumia's defining lectures and broadcasts in the run-up to the 2016 elections greatly exposed the NDC government's incompetence, leading to an unprecedented victory for the NPP with over one million votes. Bawumia also supported all party candidates materially in every election and paid for ID Cards for every delegate.
In conclusion, Bawumia's contributions to the NPP have been exceptional, and he remains a significant threat to the NDC, which has targeted him both in opposition and in government. He took NPP parliamentary seats in the former Northern Region from 3 to 16 and significantly increased the party's presidential votes in the North.
