Vice President Bawumia lauds the NFL (American Football) in Ghana

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has on Friday October 18, 2024, has joined the organizers of the NFL (American Football) for the launch of the 3rd edition of its Flag Football Tournament in Ghana.

He noted that, “when I held discussions with leadership of the NFL about the maiden edition two years ago, it was a modest beginning with 10 schools in the Greater Accra Region, and then it was increased to 15 schools last year, in the second edition.”  “I am happy to know that in this year’s edition, the NFL increased participating schools to 24, covering, for the first time, schools from other parts of the country, which participated in the play-offs for the main championship today.”

Dr. Bawumia has wished the twelve teams that qualified for the play-off well, as well as the all female U-17 exhibition. The 3rd edition of the NFL Flag Football Tournament aims at introducing and developing the American sport in schools in Ghana.

“As I have stated in my vision for sports, supporting and expanding American Football, which has created a pathway for hundreds of Africans, and other emerging global sports at the school level, will be a key objective of my government, from January, by the grace of God”, he reiterated.

Dr. Bawumia further added that, the exploits of the two young winning Ghanaian teams, which represented Ghana and Africa at the NFL’s global championship in 2023 and 2024, as well as the remarkable impacts of Ghanaian NFL stars, such as Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Brian Asamoah, Ezekiel Ansah, among others, are enough indications that developing these sports in Ghana, alongside our known traditional sports disciplines, with significant funding and focus, will help both the youth and the country significantly. Sports is a great enabler, and Ghana is blessed with talents.
