H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has on Wednesday October 30, 2024, joined stakeholders of the Ghana Music Industry for the launch of a Ghanaian-built music streaming platform, designed to connect Ghanaian music with audiences locally and globally, the Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), in Accra.
He noted that, “Over the years, our talented and hardworking musicians have given us joy, comfort and hope through their unique and infectious music. However, they are not adequately rewarded. They receive very little from the foreign music streaming apps.” “Ensuring such adequate reward and preservation of legacies, require platforms that our artistes, and all those who contribute to this vibrant industry, receive their due recognition, compensation, and rightful place on the global stage, this is what the Ghana Music Xperience, which is more than just a music streaming app, offers”, Dr. Bawumia added.
Dr. Bawumia further noted that, a dedicated streaming platform for Ghanaian music, like GMX, is a valuable step in Ghana’s digital transformation. Although Ghanaian musicians have strong local fan bases, they face financial challenges due to piracy and inadequate compensation from foreign platforms. With collective support for GMX, there is optimism that this platform will ensure fair compensation for Ghanaian artists and help sustain the local music industry.
