Vice President of the Republic, H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has graced the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Accra, on December 6, 2023, themed; “Peace begins with me: 75 years of UN Peacekeeping.
Addressing dignitaries from the member states, Dr. Bawumia noted that peacekeeping necessitates a joint mission by all to investigate and assess ideas that will result in significant change and concrete outcomes that will improve the efficacy of peacekeeping operations worldwide.
He further added that, “As we embark on this journey, it is essential to recognize the diverse challenges faced by UN peacekeepers and peacekeeping missions. Therefore, the agenda of our ministerial meeting places a focused lens on critical aspects, including the protection of civilians, strategic communications, safety and security, the mental health of peacekeepers, and the indispensable role of women in peacekeeping”.
Dr. Bawumia also indicated that the 2023 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference would be a watershed moment in which Foreign and Defense Ministers would deliberate on methods to strengthen UN peacekeeping.
Ghana is the first African country to host the United Nations Peacekeeping Conference, making it the first in Africa.
