H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic, has on January 9, 2024, joined the leadership, distinguished guests and students of the University of Ghana for the 75th Annual New Year School, at the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, under the theme: “Nurturing resilience: Adopting Technology and Embracing Humanism for Sustainable Development”.

Addressing the gathering, he noted that Government’s vision upon assuming office in 2017, has been to build a new system through digital transformation, to leapfrog the development process, overcome legacy problems and enhance both economic and public sector governance.

“In this era of 4th Industrial Revolution, leveraging our growing digital economy and making technology more accessible to teaching and learning, are, indeed, the way to go, and we are committed to doing that”, Dr. Bawumia noted.

He added that, the country has over the past seven years of massive investments in digitalization, experienced the immense impact it is having on the nation through the successful implementation of the many digital initiatives, which include the mobile money interoperability, the digital national identification system (Ghana Card), the national digital property addressing system, the digitization of government services i.e. the ports, passports DVLA, NHIS, etc.

The New Year School is a long-standing tradition of the University of Ghana, which provides a unique platform for members of the academia, public and private sectors, to deliberate on issues of national interest at the beginning of the year.
