Take proactive steps to empower our elders- Vice President Bawumia

H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has on July 4, 2024, joined the Centre for Ageing Studies under the College of Humanities of the University of Ghana as the Special Guest of Honour, for a fundraising event to support research, advocacy and development of infrastructure that are aimed at improving our knowledge of elderly care and supporting active ageing.

He noted that, “The average life expectancy in Ghana in 2024 has shown a gradual increase over the years, reflecting improvements in healthcare and living conditions. Ghana has an average life expectancy of approximately 65.64 years, marking a 1.73% rise from the previous year. This upward trend is expected to continue, with projections suggesting a significant increase to around 76 years by the end of the century.”

Dr. Bawumia further emphasized on the need to take proactive steps to empower our elders, “By taking proactive steps to empower our elders and researching into their welfare, we are not just honouring their past contributions; we are investing in the wisdom they can offer for our future, and we are equally securing our future since we (the young ones) will also grow. We shall together be building a brighter future together, and integrating the insights and experiences of our elders into the decision-making processes of nation-building. The youth can learn from the old, and the old can understand the new perspectives of the younger generation.”
