Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has on December 1, 2023, assured the agriculture sector of Government’s unwavering commitment to see its transformation, at the Farmers’ Day Celebration in Tarkwa, themed, “Delivering Smart Solutions For Sustainable Food Security”
Addressing the gathering, he stated that, “…Ghana’s experience on the agriculture front in the past six years demonstrates Government’s unwavering commitment to transform the sector and place it on a sound footing of accelerated development”.
Dr. Bawumia further stated the notable success chalked in the effort to transform the sector, through the Planting for Food and Jobs Initiative by Government since 2017.
He said, “…when you look at Ghana’s agricultural growth between 2013 and 2016, in fact it was a declining story. Average growth of agriculture between 2013 and 2016 was 2.9%, … but when we came in and implemented Planting for Food and Jobs and you look at today, notwithstanding the global economic challenges that we’ve had, the COVID pandemic, Ukraine-Russian war, disruption of supply chains, notwithstanding all of that, average growth in the agricultural sector between 2017 and 2022 was 6%”.
Dr. Bawumia added that despite the significant successes achieved through the Planting for Food and Jobs Initiative, a lot can still be done to enhance productivity and improve efficiency along the entire agricultural value chain, using Smart Solutions, hence the theme for this years’ celebration.
