The Vice President, H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has on Monday, March 20, 2023 revealed the
cause of the fire outbreak which gutted 33 shops at the Kejetia new market facility after visiting the fire scene.
Dr. Bawumia made this disclosure when he visited the scene to inspect the damage rate and also get first hand information on the cause of the fire from the officials of the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organization (NaDMO). He led a delegation which included the Second Lady, Her Excellency Samira Bawumia, Minority leader, Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Director General of NaDMO, Nana Agyemang Prempeh, Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Fred Oware among others, to sympathize with the traders.
Disclosing the cause of the fire, he said, “…I have been taken around the fire scene of which 33
shops were affected, so I asked the personnels from the Fire Service and NaDMO on the cause of the fire and they revealed to me that per their investigations someone was cooking with gas cooker and had closed the shop, that is where the fire started. Shops close by also sell turpentine and gunpowder caused the explosion in the market”.
He also commended the personnels of the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organization for their good job done to control the fire from spreading to the whole facility which holds about 8,000 shops.
