Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, born on May 23, 1968, in Kumasi, to Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie (the Apagyahene to the then Asantehene) and Madam Elizabeth Akosua Nyarko, is a Medical Doctor by Profession, Ghana’s Energy Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Manhyia South Constituency, in the Ashanti Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). 

He had his primary education at KNUST Primary School and then proceeded to Prempeh College in 1980 for his middle school education. He then went on to study medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and made his first leadership appearance there, as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in KNUST, from 1991 to 1992.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Human Biology in 1992 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, ChB) degree in 1995 at KNUST. He served as a House Officer at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital from 1995 to 1997. He continued his education at the Erasmus University in The Netherlands where he obtained an M.Sc. in Clinical Epidemiology in 1998. He proceeded to the United Kingdom to work as a Medical Practitioner and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow in 2002.  

In 2005, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh returned to Ghana to pursue a career in Business and in Politics. He successfully became the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia Constituency in 2009. Prior to the 2012 general elections, the constituency was split into two, and he won the newly constituted Manhyia South Constituency, which has retained power till date. He was the Director of Elections for the NPP for the 2012 elections.   After NPP’s victory in the 2016 general elections, he was appointed Minister of Education by President Akufo-Addo from 2017 to 2020. He was appointed Minister of Energy in 2021 after NPP again won the 2020 general elections. He is a Harvard Scholar and an alumnus of the Harvard Ministerial Leadership Program.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a devout Christian and a family man whose fatherly reach and generosity extends to all within and outside his family and political party.
