From Marginalization to Inclusion: The Zongo Development Fund’s Impact under Dr. Bawumia’s Visionary Leadership

Zongo communities in Ghana over the years have historically been marginalized. It is evident that from the days of the First Republic through to the Military Regime to the Second and Third Republic, the Zongo communities have had no or inadequate access to essential services and opportunities for economic advancement. It is on record that until the Akuffo Addo- Bawumia government, there had not been a specific policy designed for the Zongo communities.

In 2017, the Government of Ghana, under the supervision of the Akuffo Addo- Bawumia government launched the ZONGO DEVELOPMENT FUND ACT (ACT 964) to address the socio-economic challenges facing Zongo communities. This initiative has had a profound impact on the lives of residents in these communities.

The Zongo Development Fund (ZDF) was conceived as part of Dr Bawumia’s vision to promote inclusive development and reduce disparities between different regions and communities. By providing essential infrastructure, quality education, access to healthcare, and economic empowerment opportunities, the ZDF aims to improve the overall socio-economic well-being of these communities and promote inclusive development.

Under Dr. Bawumia’s steadfast leadership, the Zongo Development Fund has made tremendous strides, with significant resources mobilized and targeted support galvanized. His effective stewardship has ensured the fund’s efficient utilization, yielding tangible results and transformative impact on the ground.

Under the watch of Chief Executive Officer Dr. Arafat Suleman Abdulai, the Zongo Development Fund (ZDF) has successfully completed over 305 projects, with about 510 projects currently underway, representing a significant milestone in the fund’s efforts to drive development and improvement in Zongo communities.
Some of these notable accomplishments include:
• Educational Infrastructure: The construction and renovation of schools, provision of scholarships, and establishment of ICT centres have improved access to quality education.
• Healthcare Improvements: Upgraded healthcare facilities, including the construction of clinics and the provision of medical equipment, have enhanced healthcare delivery.
• Economic Empowerment: Training programs in various trades, coupled with financial support for SMEs, have provided employment opportunities and boosted local economies.
• Water and Sanitation Projects: The provision of boreholes, water reservoirs, and improved sanitation facilities has addressed critical water and hygiene issues.
• Youth and Sports Development: Investment in sports infrastructure and programs has fostered talent development and promoted physical fitness among the youth.

While there are more to be done in the estimated 3,000 identifiable Zongo communities in the sixteen regions, one cannot overlook Dr. Bawumia’s commitment and bold solution leadership style that have brought hope and transformation to the Zongo communities, addressing long-standing challenges and improving the quality of life for residents. As Ghana moves forward, the ZDF serves as a model for inclusive development, demonstrating the impact of visionary leadership and targeted interventions.

As a proud and indigenous Z-Town boy who grew up in Mamobi (a suburb in Accra) and witness the impacts of both the previous and incumbent government, I have no doubt that the Zongo youth will be at the forefront of Dr. Bawumia’s ambitious initiative to empower 1 million young with IT skills, particularly in coding, when he assumes the presidency, God willing. This visionary program will unlock the potential of Zongo youth, equipping them with the skills to thrive in the digital age and drive innovation and progress in Ghana.
