The Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has launched an innovative digital border control system and e-gates, at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The digital border control system, which allows rapid biometric and facial immigration checks, will enable holders of the Ghanacard to swiftly go through designated e-gates without immigration officials on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Similarly, members of the diaspora, and foreign visitors can also use the e-gates by pre-registering biometric data and travel credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the launch, Vice President Bawumia said Ghana has taken a \"monumental leap forward in border management with the commissioning of our e-gates,\" a system he said was proudly \"designed and built by Ghanaians,\" and also \"fully owned and managed by the Ghana Immigration Service.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Bawumia said with the global travel landscape evolving, Ghana, following the launch of the e-gates, has taken the giant step to join a few countries in the world who have embraced technology for rapid border control, and even gone ahead of many developed countries with the integration of both biometric and facial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"The global travel landscape is evolving rapidly, with innovations such as biometric e-gates and Digital Travel Credentials becoming the new standard. For example, the United Kingdom has begun trials of facial biometric e-gates that allow travelers to pass through immigration without presenting physical passports. Similarly, the European Union is advancing its Digital Travel Credential initiative, enabling travelers to submit their credentials digitally in advance for faster clearance,\" Dr. Bawumia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Today\u2019s milestone builds on the solid foundation of Ghana\u2019s National ID System and the Ghana Card\u2014a comprehensive identity framework integrating biometric data, digital addresses, and personal identities into a secure platform. The ultra-modern Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre, which is being built , in La, Accra, is scheduled to be completed in September next year, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Convention Centre, which will have a seating capacity of 20,000 people, will be one of the biggest in the sub-region, and will be Ghana's iconic multi-purpose centre for conventions, conferences and entertainment centre for the tourism and creative arts industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking after a working visit to the construction site, on Monday November 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia said the construction of the ultra-modern centre, fulfils an age-old national quest for a befitting centre of such magnitude, as well as significant towards the growth of the tourism and creative art sector, which he said, is key to the development of the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"For a very long time, governments after governments have not been able to execute this particular project. It is a very much needed project because we believe that some of the key pillars for the growth of this economy lie in the tourism and the creative arts,\" Dr. Bawumia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"But you don't just become a tourism or creative arts hub by saying so, you must have the necessary infrastructure to support the growth industry. When you look at Ghana today, the largest auditorium that people tend go pay to play in is less than 3000. So if an artist has to play and the capacity is 3000 people, they have to charge much higher prices to make up their cost so you tend to see the cost of shows being high and that doesn't bring up the the demand because the cost is high and therefore they don't make the requisite revenues or profits for their businesses.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Vice President, who is also seeking to be elected President of the country next month, added the construction of a new 20,000 centre will boos the industry and also be of immense benefits to Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Ghana will be in a good position with this sort of exhibition centre which is 20,000 capacity, that is almost 10 times the capacity we have now.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"That opens a whole new avenue for the creative arts and tourism sector for exhibition and for hosting conventions and conferences, which is a big market for doing so.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Ghana is a very attractive destination and we are going to be in a position with the Afcfta also here, there is going to be that synergy with hosting the Afcfta Secretariat here, there is going to be a lot of trade issues and a lot of conferences are going to be held here.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the commissioning of an ultra-modern office complex for the Commission in Accra on Monday November 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia said the commissioning of the office, also highlights the modernisation of the Lands Commission to ensure efficient service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Bawumia recalled his visit to the Lands Commission\u2019s office in February 2018, and the challenges the commission faced with office space, as well as handling of documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"On that fateful day, at the Land Title Registration Division Office, I saw volumes of files all over the place. I observed that the Commission had a huge problem with space, not only to store their files, but also for staff to do their work,\" Dr. Bawumia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"I saw a Commission, heavily dependent on manual records, the movement of files across offices, some of which you have to cross the road to the other side, and I remember saying, we cannot move forward, if we do not tackle these challenges,\" he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"In my encounter with the media, I assured of Government\u2019s commitment to see to the completion of the new head office complex of the Lands Commission, as part of measures to deal with the challenges the Commission was facing.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Today, I am happy that we have delivered on this promise, and I have the honour to formally commission this imposing new Head Office building for the Lands Commission.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Bawumia said Ghana\u2019s land sector continues to play a critical role in the economy, shaping the development of communities, cities, and the nation as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) estimates that some ninety percent (90%) of our population derive their livelihoods directly or indirectly from land.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"A well-functioning land administration system is, therefore, essential for sustainable economic development, social cohesion, and a vibrant investment climate. That is why building a robust and modern land administration must be the priority of all,\" he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highlighting government's efforts in the last eight years, Dr. Bawumia said government has been working to building a robust land administration, anchored on three pillars: modern office infrastructure, digitization and automation of business processes, through well-motivated and knowledgeable staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Backed by the Central Bank, the Credit Score System, offers individual Ghanaians opportunity to demonstrate their credit worthiness transparently, through a scoring system, which will also enable Ghanaians access to credits, to make life easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through the credit scoring and reference system, individuals who demonstrate credit worthiness by scoring points, will be rewarded by financial institutions for their financial responsibility by being able to access larger credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Launching the historic credit scoring system in Accra on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia said it marked a \"momentous occasion\" and a \"step forward in building a dynamic credit economy for Ghana and for all Ghanaians.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SOLUTION TO AGE-LONG LENDING PROBLEMS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nDr. Bawumia, who spearheaded the project, said, myCreditScore introduces a critical tool that transform the Ghanaian's access to credit and also address age-old challenges related to lending and borrowing, as the financial sector will be able to accurately access the credit worthiness of individuals, which he believes, will help address high lending rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"The lack of a credit information system therefore increases the risks of lending, and causes financial institutions to provide less credit. \"This initiative comes at a crucial time for Ghana\u2019s financial sector. Recent data from CEIC Data reports that as of August 2024, Ghana\u2019s non-performing loan (NPL) rate stands at a troubling 24.3%, with an unprecedented peak of 26.7% earlier this year.,\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Such high NPL levels reflect challenges within our financial ecosystem, where the lack of a standardized, transparent credit scoring system has contributed to elevated risks for lenders and limited financial inclusion for borrowers.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 YEAR JOURNEY FULFILLED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nExpressing satisfaction at the realisation of an individualised credit scoring system for Ghana, Dr. Bawumia recalled how the journey started in 2007 when he was Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana, with the passing of the passage of the Credit Scoring Act by Parliament in 2007. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, he noted that the project did not progress further, following the change of government in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"The purpose of the Credit Reporting Act (Act 726) is to provide a legal and regulatory framework for credit reporting in Ghana. The availability of credit information is generally accepted to be crucial for the development and maintenance of an effective financial sector. Borrowers tend to have a natural incentive not to reveal negative information about themselves,\" he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EFFECTIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PRIVATE SECTOR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nDr. Bawumia said the launch of MyCreditScore, represents another successful story of effective partnership with government and the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has described the successful training of thousands of Ghanaian youth under the first phase of the Youth Employment Agency\u2019s Skills Training Programme as concrete evidence of the NPP Government\u2019s commitment to providing opportunities for the youth to acquire employable skills for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The training of these 10,000 young people in Carpentry, Beauty Care, Hairdressing, Plumbing, Auto Mechanics, Plaster of Paris (POP), Painting, Steel Works and Welding, and Glazing (Glass Works) - who received allowances during their training and have also received start-up equipment - comes on the heels of the recent training of thousands of ladies under the Kayayei Empowerment programme, as well as formal training under the Free Technical Vocational Training (FTVET) and digital training offered by facilities such as the Accra Digital Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking at the passing out ceremony of the 10,000 YEA-trained artisans at Techiman in the Bono East Region on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 Dr. Bawumia reiterated the NPP Government\u2019s appreciation of the key role played by the youth in national development, and envisioned the creation of even more training and job opportunities under the ongoing digitalization agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSome few years ago, I was privileged to be the Guest Speaker at Legon when YEA first launched the Job Centre together with the Artisan Directory, a skill development program designed to build the capacity of artisans and to train new ones to meet current global requirements of the artisanal industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cToday, I am happy to be part of this ceremony not because I was present at the birth of this Great initiative in October, 2019 but largely because of the anticipated socio- economic and cyclical impact of these new artisans to the growth and development of Ghana, the Ecowas Sub Region, Africa and the world as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis pool of talented artisans in rows before us this morning, presents varying opportunities for us to expand and develop the sector for the growth of our nation. Ladies and Gentlemen, the artisanal industry is the oldest livelihood job in Ghana for centuries and still remains the powerful Economic engine to absorb more people seeking sustainable job opportunities,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBarely three months ago, I joined YEA in a Grand event in Accra to launch the Kayayei Empowerment programme in Madina. I am happy to state that thousands of young women through that Programme have graduated with various skilled jobs in Detergent and Soap Making, Beading and Jewelry, Makeup Artistry, Pedicure and Manicure, Baking and Decoration. More Kayayei are currently undergoing training in Madina and Ashaiman and would soon be graduating into the world of work,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Bawumia commended the leadership of the Youth Employment Programme for being abreast with the changing dynamics of the work environment, setting up a Job Centre to link applicants with jobs and creating a soon-to-be launched App to provide the location and contact of the 10,000 graduates across the country to make accessing their services easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSince we assumed office in 2017, the NPP Government had in the priority of things embarked on the digitalization agenda to cover some if not all key sectors of the economy. Indeed, leveraging on the technological potentials of Ghana in the digital marketing space, YEA is gradually becoming digitally inclined and had taken several steps forward in providing innovative solutions to the modern-day problems affecting the artisanal landscape in Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYEA has been very instrumental in the Agenda for Jobs of the NPP Government through roll outs of traditional modules, entrepreneurial modules and artisanal modules. The YEA Job Centre also connects job seekers to employers online and had facilitated the recruitment of thousands of young men and women into the private sector and NGO jobs in the country. Today, YEA has broadened its partnership with the private sector under the Business and Employment Assistant Programme and has provided human resource assistance to many certified small and medium scale enterprises across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we know, the world has been experiencing a continuous shift in global power dynamics and security over the years. The tactics of these actors such as violent extremist groups have changed from invasions in large groups to surgical strikes targeting key national infrastructure using cheap modified first person view kamikaze drones that are highly lethal aside other equally fatal approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSimilarly, misinformation and disinformation activities have equally become the order of the day, generating support for them and disaffection towards the established central government.
