Dr. Bawumia clinches decisive victory in NPP presidential primary

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been overwhelmingly elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the just-ended presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The former Vice President secured a commanding lead, winning 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid votes cast, a clear majority that positions him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

A Clear Mandate from Delegates

The primary, one of the most closely watched in the party’s history saw delegates from across the country turn out in large numbers to choose their next flagbearer. Dr. Bawumia’s victory was emphatic, finishing well ahead of his closest rival, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who garnered 23.76% of votes, with Dr. Bryan Acheampong placing third on 18.53%.

Political analysts have interpreted the results as a strong indication of Bawumia’s broad appeal among the party’s grassroots and leadership structures. The decisive outcome reflects delegates’ confidence in his leadership and strategic vision as the NPP seeks to reclaim the presidency in 2028.

Reactions and Calls for Unity

Following the announcement of results, various party leaders and figures have rallied behind the newly elected flagbearer. Members of Parliament and party elders paid tribute to Dr. Bawumia’s victory and urged unity within the party as preparations begin in earnest for the next national elections.

Senior figures in the campaign have emphasised the need for reconciliation and consolidation of support across all party factions. Dr. Bawumia himself has pledged inclusive leadership and a commitment to bringing all members together to build a formidable front for the 2028 polls.

Broader Endorsements and Support

Beyond internal party circles, national figures have also congratulated Dr. Bawumia on his victory. The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Usmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, lauded the peaceful conduct of the primaries and commended the NPP’s democratic process, describing it as a reflection of Ghana’s democratic maturity.

Other notable congratulatory messages have called on the party to focus on unity and readiness for the upcoming electoral contest, highlighting that the path to national leadership will require cohesive action and sustained engagement with the Ghanaian electorate.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Bawumia’s victory marks a defining moment for the NPP as it transitions from internal competition to national campaigning. With his mandate secured, the focus now shifts to strengthening the party’s structures, expanding its appeal across Ghana’s diverse regions, and crafting a compelling agenda that resonates with voters ahead of the 2028 general elections.
