Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has welcomed a delegation from the Global Mercy Ship, led by their Vice President- International Programmes, Michelle Bullington, to his office.
The team’s visit to Ghana on Thursday, 28th September, 2023, is in preparation for the arrival of the new Global Mercy Ship, a world-class hospital ship that is expected to wharf for about 8-10 months in Ghana.
“The Global Mercy Ship will, subject to agreement, provide free medical and surgical services in the areas of general surgery, reconstructive plastics surgery, opthalmic surgery women’s health surgery, maxillofacial & ENT surgery and paediatric orthopaedic surgery, among others”, Dr. Bawumia stated.
He further noted that, this is projected to lessen the surgical backlog, provide opportunity to some of society’s most disadvantaged people who require access to surgical services in rural areas, and support the country’s continued patient care. Plastic surgeries will also benefit individuals in the leprosarium with post-leprosy contracture who meet the requirements for surgery.
“A 250-bed rehabilitative centre will be provided by the programme to house patients who receive surgical and medical services. This centre will be donated to Ghana at the end of the programme”, Dr. Bawumia added.
The programme will again boost educational training capacities in some medical and surgical specialties and provide local employment opportunities.
